For a second straight year, students packed the pier — and soon they’ll fill Alumni Park.
The pier opened for the first time in the middle of the summer of 2013, when it attracted hundreds of boaters, sunbathers, and strollers every sunny day. In May 2014, it became a favorite backdrop for graduation photos, and even the UW Marching Band dropped by for a quick pose. But while students lounged and dipped their toes in the lake, the park’s Content and Design Committee continued to work on creating a space that will teach students and visitors what it means to be a Badger graduate. Alumni Park will celebrate the Wisconsin Idea, and it will include installations and artwork that show how UW-Madison graduates have made important contributions to Wisconsin and the world.
Alumni Park construction is expected to begin in spring 2016, with a completion date around the end of that year.
At the same time, WAA is also working to transform its own building, the Below Alumni Center, into One Alumni Place, a home for alumni when they visit campus. Construction began in spring 2015 and will continue until winter.
Together, the park, pier, and place will offer students, alumni, and visitors a pleasant green space where they can enjoy one of the most popular corners of campus — bordered by the Union Terrace, Library Mall and the Red Gym.
