Message from Dean Buss
to UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni
Welcome to the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine’s alumni e-newsletter! Periodically, we’ll keep in touch to let you know what’s happening at your alma mater. In this issue:
WHAT’S NEW AT THE SCHOOL?
Tailgate with the Badgers on Sept. 12
By the time this newsletter reaches you, we will have had our first (and not last, we hope!) CVME and tailgate! Thanks to the generous support of Midwest Veterinary Supply, Intervet Schering-Plough and other generous sponsors, the CVME and tailgate were free. Pictures of the day are available on our alumni page and our Facebook alumni page. If you missed it this year, we hope you will join us next year!
New: Alumni Reception at AAEP
By popular demand, plans are underway for a University of Wisconsin alumni reception at the AAEP Convention in Las Vegas on Monday, December 7. The plan is for the School to host an appetizer reception at a local restaurant. More details will be available in the November e-newsletter, but if you are interested in attending please contact Kristi Thorson at kvthorson@vetmed.wisc.edu or 608/265-9692.
Orthopedics Newsletter Available Online
Elbow dysplasia and a CCL stifle study are topics in the latest orthopedic newsletter from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. You’ll also get an introduction to the service’s new residents and interns. You can view the newsletter here.
Alumni Reception at WVMA – Join Us!
If you’re attending the WVMA Convention in Madison, please join us for an alumni reception on Friday, October 9 at 6:30 in the Grand Terrace at the Monona Terrace. It’s a chance to mingle with fellow alums while enjoying refreshments and catching up on what is happening at the School. You do not need to be registered for the WVMA Convention to attend the alumni reception, so please plan on joining us!
Now: a Password-Protected Segment to our Alumni Web Page
It is just in its"beta" phase, but the for-alumni-only section of our web page is up and running. Please visit www.vetmed.wisc.edu/alumni and click on "alumni portal" to sign up. It is a password-protected page where you can find message boards for each class and update your profile. Soon you will be able to see your classmate's profiles and pictures. The more people who register, the more useful and fun it will be for you! If you have any questions about the site or suggestions for additional features, please contact Kristi Thorson at kvthorson@vetmed.wisc.edu or 608/265-9692.
Post Surgical Pain Relief Study
What provides better pain relief to surgery patients, an epidural or an IV constant rate infusion? The school’s anesthesia section is currently seeking dogs who are admitted for a TPLO procedure to participate in a study to evaluate the difference between these two analgesic methods.
Analgesia After Limb Amputation
Dogs that need to undergo limb amputation are being sought for an analgesia study. Owners receive a monetary discount in exchange for participation.
