Dear Incoming Student,
Welcome to the UW-Madison, a top university in language education and research!
For all majors, learning a language is key to developing the global and cross-cultural competencies you need to succeed in our increasingly interconnected world. In the Fall semester, UW-Madison offers beginning level courses in over 40 languages, from Arabic to Zulu.
I firmly believe that having a less “common” language on my resumé put me in an elite candidate pool when I interviewed for jobs. I interviewed with 22 firms, and every interviewer commented on my language study. -UW alum
Language classes are small and interactive. You’ll meet other students, learn great study skills, and broaden your cultural perspectives.
Explore the opportunities at SOAR:
- Stop by the Language Institute table at the SOAR Resource Fair to learn about courses and majors, language tables, learning communities, summer programs, and more.
- Learn about study abroad opportunities through International Academic Programs.
- Consider a First Year Interest Group (FIG) with a language component. In a FIG, you take three related courses, one of which is language, with the same classmates.
- Watch a video about studying languages at the UW-Madison.
